We see her borrowing from her neighbors, loving her husband, raising--and, all too often, mourning--her children, and even attaining fame as a heroine of frontier conflicts or notoriety as a murderess. Formerly known as Westerly or South Street, West Roxbury has grown from a largely rural area, accessible only by train, into a charming neighborhood of Victorian homes that still offers many of the same advantages that attracted people a century ago--the quietness of small town life, with the attractions of big city living just a short distance away. West Roxbury is also the former home of Brook Farm, a utopian community founded by Reverend Ripley. Brook Farm was a center of literary achievement that attracted such foremost thinkers of the nineteenth century as Nathaniel Hawthorne, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Horace Greeley.

Arcadia Publishing
West Roxbury | Anthony M Sammarco | Paperback | 9780738534596 | Used: Good | New England History 1783579

Title: Roxbury
Author: Anthony M Sammarco
ISBN: 9780752405421
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing
Published: 1997
Binding: Paperback
Language: English
Number of Pages: 128
Condition Note: Moderate edge wear. Ideally located, Greenfield became a significant market town in early America, and subsequently a close-knit community of hard-working individuals intent on dreams of better futures. As you travel through a century of Greenfield's history, from a town of promise to a town of commercial and communal success, these photographs will bring you back in time to watch Greenfield come of age. In Greenfield, the journey begins in a time when horse-drawn wagons traveled along unpaved streets, and the local trolley and railroads supported travel and industry for citizens and factories alike. You will meander down an earlier Main Street and tour some of the oldest estates in Greenfield, such as the picturesque Lupinwood. First, in areas of common culture or at least of cultural contact, did the cities evolve independently, as phenomena of social, political, and economic growth, or did they emanate from a common center of origin? Second, how did the Greco-Roman city-state originate? In considering these questions, Mason Hammond has limited the ancient world to the Middle and Near East, the Indus Valley, and the Mediterranean region. He takes geographical and economic factors into account as he treats the cities historically by areas, from their first development in Sumeraround 3200 B.C, to the end of the ancient world in the middle of the sixth century A.D. Mr. Hammond concludes that the city's evolution was a phenomenon of local social development but was also influenced by older cultures. The city-state, he shows, was a creation of the Greek genius. It was diffused throughout the Greco-Ronan world, and withered with the decline of ancient culture in the early Middle Ages. The author provides brief geographical descriptions of the areas he covers. Thirteen maps give the locations of places referred to in the text. Where ancient and modern names differ markedly, both are given, in the text and in an index of the places shown on the maps. An extensive chronological survey and a general index document the text.

Harvard University Press
City in the Ancient World | Michael H Frisch | Hardcover | 0674131800 | Used: Very Good | New England History 1782441

Title: Away Off Shore: Nantucket Island and Its People, 1602-1890
Author: Nathaniel Philbrick
ISBN: 9780963891013
Publisher: Mill Hill Pr
Published: 1993
Binding: Paperback
Language: English
Edition: Second
Number of Pages: 273
Condition Note: Clean, unmarked copy with some edge wear. Hall looks afresh at how the colonists set up churches, civil governments, and methods for distributing land. Bringing with them a deep fear of arbitrary, unlimited authority grounded in either church or state, these settlers based their churches on the participation of laypeople and insisted on "consent" as a premise of all civil governance. Encouraging broad participation and relying on the vigorous use of petitioning, they also transformed civil and criminal law and the workings of courts. The outcome was a civil society far less authoritarian and hierarchical than was customary in their age--indeed, a society so advanced that a few dared to describe it as "democratical." They were well ahead of their time in doing so.

As Puritans, the colonists also hoped to exemplify a social ethics of equity, peace, and the common good. In a case study of a single town, Hall follows a minister as he encourages the townspeople to live up to these high standards in their politics. This is a book that challenges us to discard long-standing stereotypes of the Puritans as temperamentally authoritarian and their leadership as despotic. Hall demonstrates exactly the opposite. Charles W. Upham, a former mayor of Salem as well as the minister of the First Church of Salem and a U. S. congressman, painstakingly researched the history of the village and the notorious trials that took place there in 1692. His well-documented, minutely detailed work was the first to organize the many records of this event into one articulate account.
Upham not only supplies a wealth of valuable information on the history of Salem and the legislative and economic problems of the settlement that helped set the stage for the trials, but also provides numerous details of local hostilities that sowed the seeds of suspicion, fear, and resentment among villagers and helped fuel the witch hunt.
This edition reprints in one volume this fascinating, classic account of one of the darkest episodes in early American history. Local mills and factories manufactured goods that were shipped around the world while local shops and storefronts continued to grow and change the face of the village. The population expanded due to the success of companies like the Florence Casket Company and Florence Savings, which created more jobs. In sketching the picture the author has had help from such early explorers as Verrazano, Champlain, John Smith, and a score of literate sailors; Pilgrims and Puritans; settlers, travelers, military men, and missionaries. A surprising number of these took time and trouble to write about the new land and the characteristics and way of life of its native people. A second major background source has been the patient investigations of modern archaeologists and scientists, whose several enthusiastic organizations sponsor physical excavations and publications that continually add to our perception of prehistoric men and women, their habits, and their environment. This account of the earlier New Englanders, of their land and how they lived in it and treated it; their customs, food, life, means of livelihood, and philosophy of life will be of interest to all general audiences concerned with the history of Native Americans and of New England.

University Press of New England
Indian New England Before the Mayflower | Howard S Russell | Paperback | 0874512557 | Used: Very Good | Back Stacks B 1777790
Indian New England Before the Mayflower | Howard S Russell | Paperback | 0874512557 | Used: Like New | New England History 1787210 (temp: 27)
Indian New England Before the Mayflower | Howard S Russell | Paperback | 0874512557 | Used: Like New | New England History 1787241 (temp: 27)

Title: Builders of the Hoosac Tunnel
Author: Cliff Schexnayder
ISBN: 9781942155072
Publisher: C.J. The portraits, engravings, maps, and other illustrations in The World of Emily Dickinson attest to a much broader life than is commonly thought. Polly Longsworth's graceful introductory essay portrays a young woman of unusual intelligence and wit meeting the world on her own terms, engaging with people, ideas, natural phenomena, and her nineteenth-century culture, while choosing to keep her distance from the public eye. The elemental beauty of this land has remained unspoiled only through a serendipitous mixture of effort and coincidence. Schoodic Point outpost actually began with the slow, steady development and settlement of heavy logging, farming, herding and fish processing. People and industries gradually abandoned the Point, and it nearly fell victim to extensive coastal cottage and resort development in the late 1800s. By several twists of fate, the land became preserved and integrated into Mount Desert Island's Acadia Park, which would soon be reshaped by John D. Rockefeller Jr. and the U.S. Navy. When, in 1923, a devastating fire destroyed the famous grand hotel the Profile House and the hotel owners decided against rebuilding, lumber companies eagerly moved in to evaluate the timber in the region. A vigorous campaign to save the pristine Franconia Notch wilderness rapidly galvanized around the efforts of the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests, the Granite State's premier force dedicated to conservation. Today, the daytime silence may be broken only by the cry of a hawk overhead or the slap of a plunging fish, and the evening calm, by the lonesome howl of a coyote. But in the nineteenth century, things were quite different.

In 1895, engineers for the Metropolitan Water Board began to search the state of Massachusetts for a site on which to construct a reservoir to supply water for the growing city of Boston. Sixty-five miles west of the city, in a region of high hills and running streams known as the Swift River Valley, they found what they were looking for. When Quabbin Reservoir was finally completed and filled in 1946, the engineers had created the third largest body of fresh water in New England and hand accomplished one of the larger public works projects of its time. They had also uprooted and displaced the valley's inhabitants, leveled and flooded four towns and six villages--and formed a magnificent wilderness on some 85,000 acres.

The valley that was once known for its picturesque villages and mill ponds is now, over forty years later, home to a wide array of wildlife. Coyote, bobcat, and deer flourish, and Quabbin's eagle restoration project, begun in 1982, produced the first nesting pair of bald eagles in Massachusetts in almost a century. Today, the bald eagle population at Quabbin is estimated at forty-one birds.

But this accidental wilderness is being increasingly threatened. As early as the 1950s, the sounds of power boats occasionally intruded on the peaceful silence of the waters. In more recent years, acid rain, ozone and other pollutants, the ravages of a herd of hungry deer, and demands for increased recreational use are all jeopardizing Quabbin's waters and forests.

This book tells the story of Quabbin, tracing Quabbin's history, describing its natural resources, and discussing the environmental challenges it currently faces. The cases were reported in an unusually vivid manner, allowing readers to witness the twists and turns of fortune as the participants battled with life and liberty at stake. When the records were eventually published in the 1850s, they were both difficult to read and heavily edited to delete sexual matters. Here are the key events in Cape Cod history, with over twenty personal profiles of historic figures, more than 100 black-and-white photographs, a detailed chronology, and an index. There's enough detail here to fascinate the historian and enough stories to fill an enjoyable day at the beach. Discovered by Bartholomew Gosnold in 1602 and visited by the Mayflower on its way to Plymouth, Cape Cod has been the site of confrontations between Pilgrims and natives, between Patriots and Tories. Salt works and windmills, lighthouses and shipwrecks, and characters as varied as radio pioneer Guglielmo Marconi and playwright Eugene O'Neill have given Cape Cod a unique landscape and a fascinating human community. Men once set out to hunt whales from Provincetown Harbor, Allison writes. Today boats go to watch the whales and study them. The land remains though it continues to change, as the relentless tide and wind reshape the land and remove all evidence that any of us-Native people or Vikings, Pilgrims or Presidents, explorers, warriors, poets, painters, or entrepreneurs-ever set foot on this sandy beach.

Commonwealth Editions
Short History of Cape Cod | Robert J Allison | Paperback | 9781889833996 | Used: Like New | New England History 1767069

Title: Mayflower Bastard: A Stranger Among the Pilgrims
Author: David Lindsay
ISBN: 9780312325930
Publisher: St. Martin's Griffin
Published: 2004
Binding: Paperback
Language: English
Edition: First Edition
Number of Pages: 288
Condition: Used Copy
Publisher Description:
David Lindsay, researching old records to learn details of the life of his ancestor, Richard More, soon found himself in the position of the Sorcerer's Apprentice-wherever he looked for one item, ten more appeared. What he found illuminated not only More's own life but painted a clear and satisfying picture of the way the First Comers, Saints and Strangers alike, set off for the new land, suffered the voyage on the Mayflower, and put down their roots to thrive on our continent's northeastern shore. From the story, Richard emerges as a man of questionable morals, much enterprise, and a good deal of old-fashioned pluck, a combination that could get him into trouble-and often did. Applying demographic methods to historical research, Professor Greven presents new and unexpected evidence about the most basic aspects of family life in colonial America, and shows how these characteristics changed in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

Cornell University Press
Four Generations: Population, Land, and Family in Colonial Andover, Massachusetts | Philip Greven | Paperback | 0801491347 | Used: Good | New England History 1765336
