It tells the story of Santiago, an aging fisherman, and his long struggle to catch a giant marlin. Ernest Miller Hemingway (1899-1961) was an American novelist, short-story writer, and journalist. Hemingway's economical, understated style influenced later 20th-century writers, and he was known for his adventurous lifestyle and outspoken, blunt public image. Some of his seven novels, six short-story collections and two non-fiction works have become classics of American literature, and he was awarded the 1954 Nobel Prize in Literature. The Family Reunion is a play written mostly in blank verse, incorporating elements from Greek drama and mid-twentieth-century detective plays to portray the hero's journey from guilt to redemption. The play was unsuccessful when first presented in 1939, and was later regarded as unsatisfactory by its author, but has been successfully revived since the 1940s. The novel is set during World War II, from 1942 to 1944. It mainly follows the life of antihero Captain John Yossarian, a U.S. Army Air Forces B-25 bombardier of Assyrian heritage. Most of the events in the book occur while the fictional 256th US Army Air Squadron is based on the island of Pianosa, in the Mediterranean Sea west of the Italian mainland, although it also includes episodes from basic training at Lowry Field in Colorado and Air Corps training at Santa Ana Army Air Base in California. The novel examines the absurdity of war and military life through the experiences of Yossarian and his cohorts, who attempt to maintain their sanity while fulfilling their service requirements so that they may return home. This is Saul Bellow's sixth novel, published following Henderson the Rain King. It is a novel with autobiographical elements composed, in part, of letters from the protagonist Moses E. Herzog. The novel follows five days in the life of cultural history professor Moses E. Herzog who, at age 47, is having a midlife crisis and burnout following the divorce from his second wife. He has two children, one by each wife, and is in a relationship with a vibrant woman, Ramona, but is getting cold feet. Herzog spends much of his time both on intense, and often hilarious, intellectual reflection and mentally writing letters he never sends. These letters are aimed at friends, family members, and famous figures, including historical recipients who are dead or whom he never knew. Saul Bellow (born Solomon Bellows, 1915-2005) was a Canadian-American writer. For his literary work, Bellow was awarded the Pulitzer Prize, the 1976 Nobel Prize in Literature, and the National Medal of Arts. He is the only writer to win the National Book Award for Fiction three times, and he received the National Book Foundation's lifetime Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters in 1990. It satirizes Russian bureaucracy and atheism. The story concerns a visit by the devil and his entourage to the officially atheist Soviet Union. The devil, manifested as one Professor Woland, challenges the Soviet citizens' beliefs about religion and condemns their behavior throughout the book. The Master and Margarita combines supernatural elements with satirical dark comedy and Christian philosophy, defying categorization within a single genre. Many critics consider it to be one of the best novels of the 20th century, as well as the foremost of Soviet satire. Virginia Avenel Henderson (1897-1996), American nurse, researcher, and theorist, fundamentally revised this text by Bertha Harmer. Henderson is known as \"the first lady of nursing\" and has been called the most famous, or the quintessential nurse of the twentieth century. She began her career at Henry Street Settlement, taught at Norfolk Presbyterian Hospital in Virginia, and later Columbia and Yale. Henderson's model is one of the most widely used theories of nursing. Bertha Harmer (1885-1934), the original author of this textbook, was a Canadian nurse, writer and educator at St. Luke's Hospital Training School for Nurses in New York, Yale School of Nursing, and McGill University. Henderson writes in the introduction for this fourth edition that, although the text has been reorganized to conform with the curriculum guide of the National League for nursing Education, Harmer's original text was progressive and \"ahead of its time.\" From the nursing history collection of Sarah Abrams. This book contains accounts of the history and founding of the Red Cross, including addresses by Clara Barton, the first international conference, and other documents. It then provides accounts of the Red Cross work in U.S. floods, forest fires, cyclones, famines, the yellow fever epidemic in Florida and the MacClenny nurses, the Johnstown flood, and the Sea Islands hurricane off the coast of South Carolina. International work is also chronicled, including work during the Russian famine, in Armenia, and during the Spanish-American War. Relief work in Cuba is also described here. Finally, a series of reports on the work of the Red Cross, and a description of the Red Cross organizations of other nations are included. A prefatory note by William McKinley, then president of the United States, introduces the book. Clarissa Harlowe Barton (1821-1912) was an American nurse who founded the American Red Cross. She was a hospital nurse in the American Civil War, a teacher, and a patent clerk.
