Original blind-embossed brown cloth binding. Spine has been torn, removing most of the title lettering. Binding is split completely at the center of the book; fragile. Spine is crushed at the base and tips are bent and exposed. Contains a large bookplate from the Sarah Ainsworth Rogers Memorial Book Fund, Class of 1914, and a smaller bookplate from the Smith College Library. Library withdrawn stamps within, as well as library catalog sticker and number on front board and spine, and checkout card and pocket at rear. Pages are tanned but otherwise unmarked. Penciled on the title page, \"by Hiram Fuller, editor of the New York Mirror.\" Hiram Fuller (1814-1880) of Halifax, Massachusetts, was an American journalist. For the Mirror, Fuller wrote a series of society letters from Newport, under the pen name of \"Belle Brittan.\" This volume is in three parts, the first section collecting the letters of \"Belle Brittan\" on tour visiting Washington D.C., Wheeling, Cincinnati, Louisville, St. Louis, New Orleans, Mobile, Savannah, Richmond, and more. The second section are the letters of \"Belle Brittan\" in Newport, Rhode Island, and the third section \"Here and There,\" takes place around New York. The subject matter of the letters presumably reveals Fuller's actual beliefs regarding slavery and women's rights. An eventual defender of the Confederacy, Fuller presents an uncritical, even rosy portrayal of plantation life and slavery in the Southern travel sections. Quite a few of the letters, particularly in the sections set in Newport and surroundings, feature the writer's derisory and humorous takes on women's issues, ostensibly from the viewpoint of a woman.
