These essays are followed by an appendix. Edward Hitchcock (1793-1864), born in Deerfield, Massachusetts, was an American geologist and the third president of Amherst College. This book of essays grew out of that role. He also served as Massachusetts state geologist, and later the President of the American Association of Geologists.
