For Whom the Bell Tolls tells the story of Robert Jordan, a young American volunteer attached to a Republican guerrilla unit during the Spanish Civil War. As a demolitions expert, he is assigned to blow up a bridge during the Segovia Offensive. After he is injured, he waits alone with a submachine gun for the enemy's approach. The book was published just after the end of the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), which had been covered in detail in international media at the time. The novel is regarded as one of Hemingway's best works, along with The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms, and The Old Man and the Sea. Ernest Miller Hemingway (1899-1961) was an American novelist, short-story writer, and journalist. Hemingway's economical, understated style influenced later 20th-century writers, and he was known for his adventurous lifestyle and outspoken, blunt public image. Some of his seven novels, six short-story collections and two non-fiction works have become classics of American literature, and he was awarded the 1954 Nobel Prize in Literature.
