Volume I discusses the causes of the war and the events leading to it, up to the close of President Buchanan's administration. Volume II contains the events from the inauguration of President Lincoln to the proclamation of the emancipation of slaves. Volume III covers the events from the Emancipation Proclamation to the end of the war. Volumes II and III feature maps within the text. John William Draper (1811-1882) was as a professor of Chemistry and Physiology at New York University, and the author of A Treatise on Human Physiology. A polymath, he was a scientist, philosopher, physician, chemist, historian and photographer. He is credited with pioneering portrait photography and producing the first detailed photograph of the moon in 1840. He was also the first president of the American Chemical Society (1876–77) and a founder of the New York University School of Medicine. Hardcover, good condition.
