Spine ends are crushed, spine creased, minor spotting to boards. Contains dampstain on upper corner of pages, most visible on flyleaf and page-edges. Ownership information in ink on flyleaf. Pastedowns feature the logo of the Modern Nursing series from Putnam. Pages are tanned but free from marking or marginalia. Contains illustrations and tables, and a forward by Louise McManus, Ph.D. The book is arranged in four parts: phases and roles in nursing situations, influence in nursing situations, psychological tasks, and methods for studying nursing as an interpersonal process. In Peplau's preface, she writes that this book was an outgrowth of her work teaching psychiatric nursing to students, as well as experience as a practitioner that led to her interest in clarifying what happens in a nurse-patient relationship. This was published as a part of the Modern Nursing series, intended to capture in writing the newest developments in nursing in its postwar professionalization. Hildegard E. Peplau (1909-1999) was an American nurse and the first published nursing theorist since Florence Nightingale. She created the middle-range nursing theory of interpersonal relations, which helped to revolutionize the scholarly work of nurses. As a contributor to mental health law reform, she led the way towards humane treatment of patients with behavior and personality disorders. From the nursing history collection of Sarah Abrams.
