International work is also chronicled, including work during the Russian famine, in Armenia, and during the Spanish-American War. Relief work in Cuba is also described here. Finally, a series of reports on the work of the Red Cross, and a description of the Red Cross organizations of other nations are included. A prefatory note by William McKinley, then president of the United States, introduces the book. Clarissa Harlowe Barton (1821-1912) was an American nurse who founded the American Red Cross.
