Labor History This Month
I heard on the the radio that half of the country is traveling over the Labor Day Holiday weekend. Hopefully they are all coming here! (Western Mass is very nice.) We'll be open on the holiday at both stores. It is also a great time to take a look at our collection of books on the history (and continuing mission) of organized labor in the United States and beyond. One of our perennial favorites, which we have freshly in stock, is The Gritty Berkshires, which is both a people's history and a local history, a book recommended by our longtime trucking partner and literary friend, Don Wheeler. We also stock some titles that get to the interrelationship between the work of organizing and the work of inspiring--for example, A Singing Army: Zilphia Horton and the Highlander Folk School. That's a University of Texas Press book, and we've also stock a number of excellent titles from UMass Press, which has been very strong in their labor history selections. We'll be pulling some titles to highlight throughout the month at both stores. When you look for it, you find it, that's what I've found with people's histories, working class leaders, and people leading at their workplace. It's Still Summer
I'm also not ready to take our summer books off display. I love these books. It is still summer, by the calendar, even if the scholars are back to their schoolbooks. We have featured beach reads, of course, with a heavy preference for books with Cape Cod names like, Sandwich. Since I personally often get the most excited to read non-fiction, it made the collection feel right when I saw it was broadened to include Tove Jannson's, The Summer Book, a novel, but with so much autobiographical and true-world content; Barbarian Days, A Surfing Life; and, Been Outside: Adventures of Black Women, Nonbinary, and Gender Nonconforming People in Nature. These together felt like peak summer to me, like someone had served me a glass of iced tea. So, I'm not ready to leave it yet. Come see yourself--we'll aim to have them displayed a little longer. Soon, the dunes will all be snowy, like in The Outermost House, and it will be hard to believe it was ever here.
