Nationally-touring acoustic duo Tracy Grammer and Jim Henry will perform at the newly reopened Roundabout Books on Sunday, November 5 at 2pm.
This will be the first concert at the new, fully-accessible third floor event space at Roundabout Books. Roundabout Books plans to have concerts and events quarterly.
The Tracy Grammer & Jim Henry duo is synonymous with impeccable musicianship, perfect harmonies, a diverse repertoire, and the kind of musical chemistry and humorous banter you’d expect from musicians who have been touring and playing around the world together for over 20 years. Tracy and Jim perform a set list full of original songs, instrumentals, and creatively reimagined covers drawn from folk, pop, and Americana music. And if their names sound familiar, it’s because they live here – Grammer lives in Greenfield, and Henry is in Shutesbury.
Called “one of the finest pure musicians in folkdom” by the Boston Globe, Tracy Grammer is a writer, actor, musician and singer known in folk circles for her soothing vocals, spirited fiddle, entertaining stories, and punchy, intricate guitar work. A one-time member of Joan Baez’s band, she has traveled throughout North America, Europe, and Japan playing her own songs and those of her favorite writers, while also paying tribute to beloved songwriter Dave Carter, with whom she performed and recorded from 1996 until his sudden death in 2002.
As a sideman on acoustic and electric guitars, mandolin, and Dobro, Jim Henry can bring emotional sensitivity in one moment, then tear into a rock or country solo the next. As a solo artist or bandleader, he delivers finely crafted story-songs with a dash of humor and polished vocals. He has produced, recorded, and/or performed internationally with Mary Chapin Carpenter, Paula Cole, Shawn Colvin, Alison Krauss, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Los Lobos, Alseep at the Wheel, Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings, The Weepies, Deb Talan, Eliza Gilkyson, Tracy Grammer, Susan Werner, and The Boxcar Lilies.
Together, the duo elevates deep creativity to something that sparkles. The performance feels like an intimately choreographed pas-de-deux, with lyrical lines able to take breath, nuance, and flight build both on the outright musical skill and the depth of a close and long collaboration of performance. As if to underline the point, JIm often brings a broad swath of instruments to accompany, including electric guitar, mandolin, acoustic guitar, and Dobro. And, these, in their nuance and detailed timing, make a fine and intricate art in his hands, which comes through abundantly in a close, live performance, like this one planned at Roundabout.
Grammer and Henry are expected to play songs from Grammer’s latest album, Low Tide.
The concert will be open to all. The upper floor event space at Roundabout is fully accessible with an elevator. $20 suggested donation.
