From the outset of the Civil War, Lincoln's central purpose was to save the Union by defeating the South on the battlefield. Howard Jones is University Research Professor in the Department of History at the University of Alabama. He is the author of numerous books, including Mutiny on the Amistad: The Saga of a Slave Revolt and Its Impact on American Abolition, Law, and Diplomacy which provided the historical basis for the movie Amistad.
