Description: Illustrated with nearly 100 engravings and photographs, and a fold-out map of the region of Turkey, as situated within Asia. Original light gree cloth binding with gold, silver, red, and black decoration and text on boards and spine. Cloth is slightly soiled, hinges are worn, and spine ends are crumpled. Decoration is somewhat worn away towards the edges but still mostly visible. Fore-edges of pages are marblized. Decorative pastedowns printed in green. Interior pages only slightly browned with a few scuff marks. No known marginalia. The book is an appeal to American, and perhaps European audiences, for public opinion to influence government policy towards the Ottoman Empire. Josiah Strong, in one preface, states that there is no hope for reform from within, and another preface finds the inaction of the United States government to be contemptible. Joining Strong's endorsement of the book are W. E. Gladstone, William Lloyd Garrison, Jr., William E. Barton, Julia Ward Howe, and many others. Frederick Davis Greene (1863-1962) was the secretary of the National Relief Committee and missionary to Armenia. Henry Davenport Northrup (1836-1909) was a prolific American author. Hardcover. Condition: good. 512 pages, octavo.
