Original green cloth binding with gilt lettering and black, blue, white, and green illustration on front board. Page top-edge is gilded, fore- and bottom-edges deckled. Some evidence of dampstain to pages at hinges. Inner hinges at pastedown and flyleaf are superficially split. Pages are only lightly tanned with no marginalia. A history of Rome by region, including St. Peter's and the Vatican, with appendices of event dates, popes and emperors. Francis Marion Crawford (1854-1909) was mainly a novelist, including tales of the supernatural, but also wrote several historical works, including this one.
