Nelson Algren (1909-1981) was the "bard of the down-and-outer," and one of the best known literary writers of the 1940s and 50s. His best known books, other than this one, are The Man with the Golden Arm, and Never Come Morning, both of which are set in Chicago. City on the Make was published in 1951 and has remained a perennial favorite in Chicago, its 12,000 word lyrical essay describing the essence of Chicago, "a rigged ball game;" dirty but loved. Hardcover, very good condition. 92 pages, 12mo.
