The Russell Sage Foundation, with its mission of improving social and living conditions in the U.S., was instrumental in funding studies inquiring into nursing education. This study discusses the deficiencies in staffing nursing services in the early 1950s, the structure and limitations of the hospital school model, baccalaureate curricula for nursing, supplementary and graduate programs, and the conclusions of the study. Margaret Bridgman was the dean of Skidmore College when it developed its department of nursing, and subsequently was a consultant for the National League for Nursing in its Department of Baccalaureate and Higher Degree Programs.
