Author: L.L.D. John Clark Ridpath
Publisher: The Jones Brothers Publishing Co., Cincinnati, Ohio
Published: 1885
Binding: Hardcover
Language: English
Number of Volumes: 3
Number of Pages: 2346
Catalogs: Encyclopedias, Reference, History
Description: Three volumes, complete. Partially original calf binding, covering boards and including spine, but repaired with leatherette at spine hinges and tips. Professional or semi-professional repair holds up well. Profusely illustrated with maps, charts, sketches, portraits, and diagrams. Printing of 1884 edition from 1885. Leather of boards and spine is somewhat scuffed, but generally these volumes have been used lightly. Repair added yellow pastedowns to original maroon, blue, green, and cream marbled endpapers. Page edges are also marbled in this color scheme, but somewhat faded. Volumes contain no marginalia or marking inside. Volume I is dedicated to the ancient world, volumes II and III are dedicated to the modern world, which the author begins at Late Antiquity, or around the decline of the Western Roman Empire. The modern period is largely focused on Europe, and in volume III, the United States, but also includes histories from other areas of the world, particularly in volume III. John Clark Ridpath (1840-1900) was an American educator, historian, and editor, and also the author of a later eight-volume history of the world, a sixteen-volume expansion of this encyclopedia, and a ten-volume history of the United States. Hardcover, very good condition, three volumes. 2346 total pages, vol. I 936 pp., vol. II and III 1410 pp., quarto.
