Description: This is a complete 29 volume leatherbound set with the Cambridge University crest embossed on the cover in gold and the top edges gilt. The leather is glossy and feels soft. A few of the covers show some light scuffing and most of the books have moderate to heavy wear on the top and bottom of the spines. Volumes 1, 2, 5, and 24 have tears in the spines. The last end paper in volume 1 is detached and the end papers in the index are detached. Conditions range from very good to fair, with the index having the weakest binding. Despite the wear, the embossing is clear and volume numbers are legible on all spines. The text is clear and the pages are bright. Some of the entries have in-line illustrations, and there are photo plates and maps throughout. Several maps and illustrations are in color. Containing geography, history, and sciences, this encyclopedia set is a highly regarded cultural artifact from the early twentieth century. The eleventh edition includes 28 volumes and an index with cross references for improved use. A list of notable contributors can be found at the beginning of each volume. Among these names are Gertrude Bell, John Muir, Bertrand Russell, Peter Kropotkin, and many other influential writers of the day.
