Original gray-green-brown cloth binding with gilt text on spine, and gilt, red, green, and silver decoration on covers. Some scuffing to covers and fraying at edges. The hinges are well-worn and a few early pages are nearly loose. However, the text is unmarked and overall the contents are in good and complete condition. This book chronicles the 1893-1896 expedition of explorer Fridtjof Nansen (1861-1930) and the ship Fram to reach the geographical North Pole by harnessing the east-west current of the Arctic Ocean. Nansen's innovations included a ship design intended to better withstand ice, and by using the expertise of the Sami and Inuit. Nansen and the crew also used sledge and skis as methods of transport off-ship. The maps of the front pocket are the Physical Chart of the North Pole Region, and a Map Showing the Route of the "Fram" and Nansen and Johansen's Sledge Journey. The maps of the rear pocket are Preliminary Sketch Map of Franz Josef Land, and Preliminary Map of the Route of the "Fram." Color plates are of watercolor and colored pencil sketches made by Nansen, and some of them are protected with tissue. In them, Nansen depicts light phenomena in the polar night, a moon-ring with mock moons, aurora borealis, an auroral crown, walruses, and more. There are photographs of the crew, scenes from their work and amusement, and much more. Hardcover, good condition. Volume I: 587, Volume II: 714 plus publisher's list, 1301 total pages, octavo.
