This is a sermon intended also as a eulogy for Cornelius's fellow pastor, Reverend Samuel Worcester, and his life, his character, his studies, and his religious work are described in the sermon. The Tabernacle Church, now the Tabernacle Congregational Church, traces its origins back to 1629, one of the oldest congregations in the United States. Reverend Samuel Worcester was known for his leadership in the growing world mission movement, which dovetailed with Salem's maritime importance, particularly concerning shipping to and from East Asia.
