Description: Volume Two only. The Genius of Christianity by Viscount Chateaubriand, followed by the defense of The Genius of Christianity and the notes of A. M. de Fontanes. Original calf spine and mottled paper boards in blue and black. Spine is stamped with gilt lettering, and there is some evidence of pest damage to the spine. Both boards have bent corners, and tips and edges are exposed. Textblock is in very good condition, however, browned but without marking, and stitching is solid. Foxing to endpapers and title page. This is a work by the French author François-René de Chateaubriand (1768-1848), written during his exile in England in the 1790s as a defense of the Catholic faith, then under attack during the French Revolution. It was first published in France in 1802, after Chateaubriand returned to France following Napoleon's general amnesty for émigrés who had fled the Revolution. Hardcover, good condition. 399 pages, 12mo.
