Description: Third American edition, with engravings. Original full calf binding, greatly worn, with gilt decoration on boards, spine, and turn-ins. Front board is mostly separated from binding, and remains attached in a fragile way. Pastedowns are marbled in pink and brown; page ends marbled but greatly faded. Interior is substantially foxed, and there is some additional spotting on some of the pages, and a pencil notation on flyleaf. A few pages are torn but the engravings appear complete in this volume. Lalla Rookh is a chivalric romance consisting of four narrative poems, linked together by prose. Its title, and subject, comes from the Persian story The Garden of Knowledge, and concerns the fictional daughter of 17th century Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. Thomas Moore (1779-1852) was an Irish poet and lyricist, and first published this work in 1817. Hardcover, acceptable condition. 289 pages plus 48 page index, 24mo.
