Paul Belloni Du Chaillu (c. 1831-1903) was a French-American traveler, zoologist, and anthropologist. He became famous in the 1860s as the first modern European outsider to confirm the existence of gorillas, and later the Pygmy people of central Africa. Du Chaillu traveled extensively across Scandinavia between 1871 and 1878. His aim in writing "was to make a study of the physical characteristics of the country and to closely observe the manners and customs of its inhabitants." This volume discusses winter in Scandinavia, with short, sunless days and beautiful nights, Christmas festivals and preparations, a trip to Stockholm from Christiana by rail, snow storms, winter in small towns and on farms, cold weather attire and snow shoes, driving reindeer, the customs and dwellings of Laplanders (Sami), relationships between Finns and Lapps (Sami), the Norwegian coast, the Lofoten Islands, fishing and migration of cod, the climate of Scandinavia, navigation in storms, the advent of spring, wedding customs, the mountainous regions of Norway, large Swedish estates, bathing and spas, schools, cathedrals, castles, mines, and much more. Hardcover, very good condition. 474 pages, octavo.
