Pages are in very good condition. The book is a treatment of one of the most critical periods in American history, the months between the election of Lincoln and the fall of Fort Sumter. Dr. Potter approaches this period through a study of the Republican party and its leaders, especially Lincoln and Seward. He examines the attitude of the Republicans to the threat of succession, their policies and actions in the face of actual withdrawal by the Gulf states, and their hopes that the Union might be restored without a resort to arms. At the time of publication, David Potter (1910-1971) was an assistant professor at Yale University specializing in the causes and approach of the American Civil War, and this book was the result of his dissertation. He had a distinguished career following the publication of this book, and is considered a prominent consensus historian. Hardcover, good condition. 408 pages, octavo.
