Title: Mark Twain's Sketches, New and Old
Author: Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens)
Publisher: The American Publishing Company, Hartford, Connecticut, and Chicago
Published: 1875
Binding: Hardcover
Language: English
Edition: 1st edition
Number of Pages: 320
Catalogs: Humor, Mark Twain, Literature
Description: Original blue cloth binding stamped in gilt, with additional black decoration on both boards and spine. Profusely illustrated with frontispiece and in-text illustrations by True Williams. Spine is darkened, and the edges of the spine show some wear and minor tearing. Three of the four corners are exposed, but otherwise the cover is crisp. Owner's name in pencil on flyleaf. Pages are clean and unmarked. Likely first edition in its second state: does not have errata on page 299, nor the repeated footnote from page 119 on page 120. Contains a misprint in table of contents, regarding "From Hospital Days" onward. This compilation brought together many of Twain’s early sketches, essays, and brief narratives originally published in newspapers and magazines. It includes travel anecdotes, frontier humor, satirical observations on social manners, politics, and religion, and some sketches drawing upon his experiences in the American West. This collection illustrates the range of Twain’s short-form writing and the foundations of the comic style that later defined his major works. All the stories are fictional except for "The Case of George Fisher." It includes the short story "A Ghost Story", among others. Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835-1910), known by the pen name Mark Twain, was an American writer, humorist, and essayist. He has been praised as the "greatest humorist the United States has produced," with William Faulkner calling him "the father of American literature." Hardcover, very good condition. 320 pages, square octavo.
