The volume is copiously illustrated with diagrams. Contains instructions on tools, the firing of steam boilers, boiler repair and inspection, water heaters, steam pumps, the chemistry of the furnace, pipes and tubes, fuel oil, useful tables, and accidents and injuries. The author, Nehemiah Hawkins (1833-1928) was an American inventor, author, and publisher from Providence, Rhode Island. He wrote many of the Audel guides, sometimes under the name William Rogers.
