Description: Inscribed and signed by Thurman: "To Donald Mathison, With high hopes for the Future. Howard Thurman." Original maroon paper-covered boards with silver lettering on cover and spine; dust-jacket of cream paper with maroon lettering. Dust-jacket in very good condition, with minor tanning and a few small tears. Contains the bookplate of Donald Mathison. Pages are clean and unmarked, with each meditation numbered in publisher's red ink. Page edges are deckled. The book is a collection of meditations for the Sunday Calendar of the Church for the Fellowship of All Peoples. Howard Washington Thurman (1899-1981) was an American author, philosopher, minister, theologian, Christian mystic, educator, and civil rights leader. He also wrote The Greatest of These, Deep River, and The Negro Spiritual Speaks of Life and Death. In 1944, a few years before this book was published, Thurman left his tenured position at Howard University to help the Fellowship of Reconciliation establish the Church for the Fellowship of All Peoples also known as The Fellowship Church in San Francisco. He served as co-pastor with a white minister, Alfred Fisk. Many of their congregants were African Americans who had migrated to San Francisco from Oklahoma, Texas, and Arkansas for jobs in the defense industry. Hardcover, very good condition. 93 pages, 12mo.
