Frontispiece photograph of Evelyn Baring and map of the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan in volume I. Volumes are marked with the embossed stamps of the American Congregational Library of Boston, and the spines have pasted catalog numbers. Contents include Ismail Pasha 1863-1879, Arabi revolt 1879-1883, Soudan 1882-1907 in volume I; Soudan 1882-1907 (continued), the Egyptian Puzzle, British policy in Egypt, Reforms, the Future of Egypt in volume II. Evelyn Baring, the First Earl of Cromer, was a British statesman, diplomat and colonial administrator. He served as the British controller-general in Egypt during 1879, part of the international control which oversaw Egyptian finances after the Egyptian bankruptcy of 1876. He later became the agent and consul-general in Egypt from 1883 to 1907 during the British occupation, prompted by the Urabi revolt. This position gave Baring de facto control over Egyptian finances and governance. Hardcover, good condition. Volume I is 594 pages, volume II is 600 pages, octavo.
