Original buff cloth binding with green and maroon text and decoration on spine and front board, with white, maroon, and green dust-jacket. Dust-jacket is in good condition with minor wrinkling and tearing at edges. Binding is mostly firm, with an interior split at the hinge following the front pastedown and flyleaf. Stitching is intact. Pages are clean and unmarked. This book places the art created by Plains Indians imprisoned at Fort Marion in the 1870s in context. Indigenous artists represented in this volume include those from Cheyenne, Comanche, Kiowa, and Arapaho nations. The author provides a pictographic dictionary for interpreting drawings, as well. Karen Daniels Petersen (1910-2007) wrote extensively on Indian ethnology and art, including Chippewa and Plains Indian arts. Hardcover, good condition. 340 pages, horizontal quarto.
