The book covers athletic training in general, with specific advice for baseball, track & field, basketball, and football. Warner was a champion athlete at Cornell in the 1890s, and the coached at Carlisle Indian School, Cornell, University of Georgia, Pittsburgh University, and Stanford. He was an innovator in football, in particular, including the development of the three-point stance. His time at Carlisle Indian School in particular is referenced at various points in the book, including the technique of his most famous player, Jim Thorpe.
