Title: The Camp, the Battlefield, and the Hospital; or, Lights and Shadows of the Great Rebellion.
Author: Dr. L. P. Brockett
Publisher: National Publishing Company, Philadelphia et al., and New England Publishing Company, Boston
Published: 1866
Binding: Hardcover
Language: English
Edition: First Edition
Number of Pages: 512
Catalogs: American Civil War, Military History, Memoir
Description: Illustrated with over 100 engravings. Original brown cloth binding with gilt lettering on spine. Spine ends are greatly frayed and board edges are exposed. Interior is in very good condition, however, with clean unmarked pages and brown glazed pastedowns. Some foxing. Ownership information in pencil on flyleaf: F. H. Knight, Worcester. Contains two frontispieces separated by protective tissue, "The Scout," and a portrait of Ulysses S. Grant. The book is divided into four parts: narratives of spies, scouts, and detectives; daring enterprises of officers and men; incidents of army life in camp, field, and hospital; and deeds of heroic courage and self-sacrifice. Published only shortly after the end of the war, Brockett notes in the introduction that the book grew somewhat organically from the desire to catalogue the individual narratives of adventure and sacrifice. As such, it is not a standard history but a compilation of these narratives, taken freshly from the battlefield. Linus Pierpont Brockett (1820-1893) was a prolific author of American and European histories and editor of several encyclopedias. Hardcover, good condition. 512 pages, octavo.
