Description: Original embossed cloth binding with gilt lettering on front board, but spine missing completely. Corners are bumped and board is exposed. General scuffing to boards, and front board is becoming separated from binding. Contains the ownership information of several owners in ink and pencil, including that of Benjamin Ayers, 1868, and the card pocket of First Congregational Church, Williamsburg MA. Contains fold-out map. Title continues: together with an introduction, setting forth the character of the work, and the immense facility this method affords the reader for understanding the word of God. Also, three different tables of contents prefixed, a general index of subjects, a scripture index, and tables of principal subjects with their parallel sections subjoined, so elaborated and arranged in alphabetical order as to direct at once to any subject required. Rev. Nathaniel West was born in Ulster, Ireland, in 1794 and entered the ministry in the Independent Connection in Hull, England, in 1821. He came to the United States in 1834, and was pastor of Presbyterian churches in various parts of Pennsylvania. He was senior chaplain in the Satterlee United States Military Hospital, West Philadelphia, from May, 1862, until his death, Sept. 2, 1864.
