Description: 1839 edition of The Compleat Angler, originally published in 1653. Contains frontispiece engraving of Izaak Walton and facsimile title-page from original edition, and an updated title page. Contains a number of other engravings, illustrations, and musical notation. Original brown cloth binding with gilt lettering and decoration on boards and spine. Spine missing pieces and cloth split at hinges, has been repaired. Some spotting and dirt. Pages are gilt-edged all around. Yellow pastedowns show repair with tape, and dampstain is evident mostly on engravings. This edition includes an epistle to the reader, commendatory verses to Izaak Walton, a life of Walton by Charles Cotton, a Life of Charles Cotton, Esq. by J. H., Walton's 1653 discourse on rivers, ponds, fish, and the art of fishing, and Cotton's second part on fly-fishing, notes, and an index. Izaak Walton (1593-1683) was an English writer and biographer. Charles Cotton (1630-1687), a poet and essayist, was Walton's friend and contributed the second part on fly-fishing in upland rivers. Hardcover, acceptable condition, dampstained. 396 pages, 12mo.
