Description: Ex-library. Original teal cloth binding with gilt lettering on spine and logo on front board. Spine ends and board corners are fraying slightly, and cover is mildly scuffed. Bears bookplate, stamps, card pocket, reserve slip, barcode, and catalog number of the Smith College Library. Some dirt on page fore-edges. Pages are otherwise clean and unmarked. Contains reproductions of 14 pamphlet covers. While conceived as the first volume in a four-volume series (assembling seventy-two pamphlets in all) to be published by the Belknap Press of Harvard University as part of the John Harvard Library Series, this is the only volume of the series ever published. There is a general introduction of 202 pages, followed by 14 pamphlets. The pamphlets include A Discourse Concerning Unlimited Submission and Non-Resistance to the Higher Powers, Boston, 1750; Reasons why the British Colonies in America should not be charged with internal taxes, New Haven, 1764; Letter from a gentleman at Halifax, containing remarks upon a pamphlet entitled, the Rights of Colonies examined, Newport, 1765, and more. Each pamphlet is reprinted in its entirety and introduced by an essay written by Bailyn with a biographical sketch of the author, analysis of what led to the pamphlet's publication, and an interpretation of its contents.
