The Jungle Book is an 1894 collection of stories in which most of the characters are animals, such as Shere Khan the tiger and Baloo the bear, though a principal character is the boy Mowgli, who is raised in the jungle by wolves. Joseph Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) was an English journalist, novelist, poet and short-story writer. He was born in British India, which inspired much of his work. William Henry Drake (1856-1926) had developed skills in drawing wild animals, particularly wild cats, and as a result he received commissions to illustrate books, including The Jungle Books, by Kipling. In 1902 he was made an associate member of the National Academy of Design. Hardcover, acceptable condition. 303 pages, small octavo.
