Description: Limited edition, copy #261 of 520. Two volumes. Original brown buckram with gilt tops and marbled endpapers, and maroon cloth-covered case for the volumes. Cloth case has a few light scuff marks, but the books inside are nearly pristine. Pages have deckled edges, one light penciled remark from the owner on the rear endpaper of volume I. Each volume contains a narrow maroon silk bookmark. The Piazza Press limited edition was issued anonymously to subscribers by publisher Peter Davies. This is the uncensored, unexpurgated edition of the novel. Contains receipt from Marshall Field, possibly unrelated. The novel was originally published anonymously, or by Private 19022, revealed in the 1940s to be Frederic Manning (1882-1935). This is one of the most realistic World War I novels written, especially for its time, and was drawn heavily from Manning's experiences as a private in the King's Shropshire Light Infantry. This work is the story of Manning's battalion "from the time it is chewed to pieces on the Somme until, brought up to strength again, it is thrust into another vain attack." The novel was praised highly by many, including T. E. Lawrence and Ernest Hemingway. Hardcover, two volumes with slipcase, near fine condition. 453 pages, octavo.
