Tanning and foxing throughout. Contains tissue-protected frontispiece, illustrations mid-text, and the life of Bunyan as an introduction. This work, originally published in 1678, is a Christian allegory about the protagonist's progress through life in search of salvation, presented as an omniciently-narrated dream-sequence. It is regarded as one of the most significant works of Protestant devotional literature, and considered by some the first novel in English. The Pilgrim's Progress influenced many later writers, including Dickens, Hawthorne, Alcott, Melville, and Blyton. John Bunyan (1628-1688) began the work while in prison for violating the Conventicle Act 1664, which prohibited the holding of religious services outside the auspices of the established Church of England. Hardcover, very good condition. 603 pages, 12mo.
