Publisher: McClure, Phillips and Company, New York
Published: 1902
Binding: Hardcover
Language: English
Number of Pages: 108

Description: Frontispiece of Samuel Johnson by Sir Joshua Reynolds, engraved by James Watson. Original paper over boards, missing spine. Small in-text decorations in purple by William Jordan. Pages are fragile: some have torn, but are complete. Remnants of bookplate from Mr. Phillip's Room on front pastedown. This was a limited edition of 750 copies printed by the McClure Press. This book is number 461 of 750. In 1785, a year after Johnson's death, Reverend George Strahan, D.D., published a posthumous volume of writings given to him by Johnson, which he named Prayers and Meditations. These were the private religious meditations of a very public man of letters, and it is unclear whether Johnson intended publication. This edition from 1902 contains an introductory note (which follows the text) and a number of notes, some of which include biographical information about Johnson and his mental state at the time of writing. Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) was an English writer who made lasting contributions as a poet, playwright, essayist, literary critic, biographer, editor, and lexicographer. His most famous works are his English dictionary of 1755, and his Lives of the Most Eminent English Poets. Hardcover, acceptable condition. 108 pages, 12mo.
