Title: Theron and Aspasio: or, a Series of Dialogues and Letters, upon the most important and interesting subjects. In two volumes. Volume II.
Author: James Hervey
Publisher: John Reid for W. Darling, Edinburgh
Published: 1769
Binding: Hardcover
Language: English
Number of Pages: 472
Catalogs: Christianity, Religion, Theology
Description: Volume II. Full calf binding, very worn, particularly at spine, hinges, and edges, but also greatly rubbed and cracked on both boards. Some evidence of historic pest damage and dampstain. Despite condition of exterior, text-block is surprisingly firm. Ownership information in ink on flyleaf and back of title page: James Cummings, and Presented by Samuel Cummings to N.M.C. Library. Ink notation on final blank page by Joseph Fitzpatrick. Interior pages are foxed and tanned, but otherwise unmarked. This is a series of theological dialogues, presented as letters between friends, written in 1755. It was well-received but somewhat controversial for promoting antinomianism, or a rejection of legalism for salvation by divine grace. James Hervey (1714-1758) was the rector of Weston-Favell, Northamptonshire, and ultimately a Calvinist preacher, but was also influenced by John Wesley and the Oxford Methodists. Hardcover, good condition. 472 pages, octavo.
