Description: Illustrated. Original half green calf with gilt trim on boards, gilt decoration and raised bands on spine. Mottled blue paper on boards, and marbleized pastedowns in maroon, blue, and cream. Page edges are marbled as well. Bookplate of Thomas W. Storrow on front pastedown, possibly Thomas Wentworth Storrow, 1779-1862. Some scuffing and wear to leather at hinges and edges. Text-block is secure, and while pages lightly tanned, there are no markings or marginalia. Commonly known as Gulliver's Travels, this 1726 satirical prose novel by the Anglo-Irish writer and clergyman Jonathan Swift. The novel satirizes human nature and literary traveler's-tales. Although the novel is popularly regarded as children's literature, Swift wrote it as a political satire. This edition contains over 400 illustrations, with notes, life of the author, and an essay on satirical fiction by W. C. Taylor. Hardcover, very good condition. 508 pages, octavo.
