Set during the Napoleonic Wars, the work comprises both a fictional narrative and chapters in which Tolstoy discusses history and philosophy. An early version was published serially beginning in 1865, after which the entire book was rewritten and published in 1869. The editor of this 1912 edition, Pavel Biryukov (1860-1931), was a biographer and friend of Leo Tolstoy. Alexander Apsit (1880-1943) was considered the founder of Soviet poster art. Hardcover, very good condition. 796 pages (vol I: 407, vol II: 389), quarto.
