Description: Original embossed green cloth binding with faded gilt lettering on spine and gilt decoration on front board. Rear board mostly detached, and stitching is loose in places. Spine is cracked and tearing in multiple places. Edges are frayed and exposed. Pencil markings and erasure on flyleaf and pastedown. Inside hinges are cracked. Pages are tanned but unmarked. There is evidence of slight dampstain around publisher's list. Contains a frontispiece, "The Contented Man," and an illustrated title page featuring "The Cow Boys." This is a collection of stories and sketches, many of which are set or relate to the Dutch settlements north of Manhattan, in Westchester County and around the Hudson River. Others relate to Irving's life in, and observations about Europe. Besides Wolfert's Roost, this volume contains The Creole Village, Mountjoy, The Bermudas, The Widow's Ordeal and The Grand Prior of Minorca, Sketches in Paris in 1825, Broek: or The Dutch Paradise, Guests from Gibbett Island, The Seminoles, The Count Van Horn, Don Juan: A Spectral Research, The Phantom Island, and more. Washington Irving (1783-1859) was an American short-story writer, essayist, biographer, historian, and diplomat of the early 19th century. In 1855, he produced Wolfert's Roost, a collection of stories and essays that he had written for The Knickerbocker and other publications.
